SUMMARY
Religion is a fundamental element of culture, which exerts great influence on human beings. Therefore, no society can be properly understood without a good knowledge of its religious institutions. This is more pertinent in a culturally diverse and multi-religious society like Nigeria, where religion plays a vital role in determining whether people live in peace and harmony or not. Apart from that, because of its antiquity, religion is an heritage. This paper therefore, examines the nature of religion in Nigeria. It is recommended that the government should embark on public enlightenment for the people on the multi-religious nature of the country to enhance religious tolerance.
