This article is a study on religion and politics in Nigeria with special reference to Sharia. The paper situates the Sharia problem in Nigeria within several problems it has generated ever since it came to political limelight in 1978. Against this background, the study identifies the gradual process through which Sharia became politicized and later degenerated to crisis situation in the year 2000. The study also highlights the various dimensions the politicization of Sharia has assumed since 1999, especially, under president Olusegun Obasanjo administration and offers some suggestions which can assist the policy process in dealing with the Sharia question in Nigeria.
